Birds diversity in anthropic environments in a semi-desert location in central Mexico

Abstract

Urbanization is currently one of the main causes of ecosystem deterioration. In this paper, we analyze bird diversity and its possible association with environmental attributes in four anthropic environments: urban, rural, riparian and xerophytic scrub, in a semi-arid zone of central Mexico. In each environment we placed eleven point-counts, which we visited four times from December 2014 to April 2015. A multivariate analysis was used to compare localities and associated environmental factors. The urban area had lower avian diversity, whereas the other environments had no differences in their species richness. Species composition showed changes according to an alteration gradient. The high beta diversity indicates the need to implement conservation actions in the set of environments, especially to maintain patches of vegetation in urban and rural areas, as well as to conserve environments with less anthropic impact. The study highlights the importance of rural environments for their species richness, having the greatest abundance of native species, and the greatest richness and abundance of migrant species. Our data support the need to put into practice management actions in modified environments for the conservation of their biodiversity.
