About the Journal
Scope and aims
Huitzil Revista Mexicana de Ornitologia is an electronic academic journal, with two editions a year. Submitted articles are subject to rigorous peer review. We receive scientific contributions of original articles derived from research studies, thematic reviews, and brief communications on birds distributed in Mexico and the Neotropics in general. These studies should be relevant to understanding patterns and processes in the biology and ecology of birds, and contribute to conservation of their populations and their habitats.
Peer review process
Manuscripts submitted to Huitzil Revista Mexicana de Ornitología should contain original information, which has not been published or is not submitted for publication to another journal. Authors interested in submitting manuscripts to the journal need to register on the OJS platform, and should prepare manuscripts following the editorial guidelines set out in Instructions to Authors.
Relevance of manuscripts is evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief and if the subject of the manuscript is not appropriate for the journal, or the format and presentation of the manuscript is not adequate, it will be returned to the corresponding author without continuing the review process.
Manuscripts considered suitable for the journal are assigned to an Associate Editor to coordinate the peer review process, however the Associate Editor may also reject the manuscript after an initial review. Following peer review, the Associate Editor may take into consideration the reviewers comments to formulate and submit an opinion and recommendation. The Editor-in-Chief will make the final decision of acceptance, rejection, or major or minor revisions for the manuscript that will be communicated to the Corresponding Author.
Where major or minor revisions are requested, the authors should revise their manuscript taking into account all the recommendations made by revieweres and editors. Revisions of the manuscript should be undertaken within 30 days of notification of a decision, although the Corresponding Author may request an extension of time to complete their revisions. The revised manuscript may be resent for peer review as considered necessary.
Open access policy
The journal provides open access to its content based on the principal that free open access to research enables greater global interchange of knowledge.
Publication frequency
Huitzil Revista Mexicana de Ornitología is an electronic format journal available in continuous publication mode. Journal identification is by calendar year, volume, and number. The journal comprises two issues a year. Closing date for Issue 1 is 30 June, and for Issue 2 is 31 December.
Plagiarism policy
Authors who submit a manuscript to Huitzil Revista Mexicana de Ornitología are responsible for its content, and also guarantee that the material represents original work that is not being considered by another journal. As a measure to prevent plagiarism, Huitzil Revista Mexicana de Ornitología reserves the right to use ithenticate, anti-plagiarism software, to check manuscripts for improper practices. If plagiarism is detected, the manuscript will not be considered for review.

ETHICAL POLICY
Responsabilities of the Editorial Committee
The Editorial Committed provides support and feedback to the Editor in Chief on the direction and content of the journal. The Editorial Committee may suggest topics or Special Editions for publication, and endorses Huitzil Revista Mexicana de Ornitología among their colleagues to promote submission of manuscripts to the journal.
Responsabilities of the Editor-in-Chief
The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the editorial content of Huitzil Revista Mexicana de Ornitología. The Editor-in-Chief should endeavor to meet the needs of readers and authors; to constantly improve the journal; to ensure quality of published material; and push for academic and scientific standards. Additional, the Editor should be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when necessary.
The Editor's decision to accept or reject a work for publication should be based solely on the importance of the article, and the originality, clarity, and relevance that the work represents for the journal.
The Editor undertakes to guarantee the confidentiality of the evaluation process, and monitor the editorial process of manuscripts.
In particular, the Editor-in-Chief receives initial manuscript submissions, determines their suitability for the journal, and where appropriate, assigns an Associate Editor to guide the manuscript through the peer review and evaluation process.
Responsabilities of Associate Editors
Associate Editors should evaluate the intelectual content of manuscripts without bias of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, nationality, or political philosophy.
The Associate Editor assigns at least two peer reviewers to evaluate each manuscript they are assigned, and takes into consideration the reviewers' comments when formulating their own evaluation and recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief.
The Associate Editor undertakes to guide the manuscript through the review process. Where an Associate Editor can no longer undertake their functions, they should notify the Editor-in-Chief.
The Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, and any member of the editorial team will not disclose information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, or other editorial advisors.
All unedited material in manuscripts submitted to the journal will not be used in an editor's personal research without the express written consent of the author. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review will be kept confidential, and will not be used for personal gain. Editors must take fair and impartial decisions and ensure a fair and appropriate peer review process.
Responsabilities of Authors
Authors must guarantee that their manuscripts are the product of their own original work, and that data has been obtained ethically. In addition, authors must guarantee that their manuscript has not been previously published elsewhere, or is being considered by another journal. A submission will be considered as previously published when any of the following applies:
- When the full text of the manuscript has been previously published.
- When extensive fragments of published materials form part of the text submitted to the journal.
- When the work submitted to the journal is contained in reports published in full.
These criteria refer to previous publications in print or electronic form, and in any language.
In preparing their manuscript, authors must strictly follow the editorial guidelines in Instructions for Authors that have been defined by the Editorial Committee.
Original research articles should contain a precise description of the research undertaken, as well as an objective discussion of its importance. The underlying data must be accurately represented in the article. The manuscript should contain sufficient detail and appropriate references that enable others to utilize and repeat the study. Fraudulent or deliberately inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
Authors must ensure that they have written the original work in its entirety, and if authors have used the work or words of others it must be properly cited. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical editorial conduct and is unacceptable. Consequently, any manuscript that incurs plagiarism will be eliminated and not considered for publication.
Authors must guarantee that their work is original. Submission of a redundant manuscript, which is actually a repeat publication to which new, generally irrelevant material is added to make it seem like a new article, will be considered unethical. An author should not, in general, publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submission of the same manuscript to more than one journal constitutes unethical behavior and will not be acceptable for publication.
Sources must be properly recognized. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in the nature of the work presented. Information obtained privately, such as in conversations, correspondence or discussions with third parties, should not be used without explicit written permission from the source.
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study. All those who have made significant contributions should appear as co-authors. The main author (s) must ensure that all co-authors are included in the article, and that all have seen and approved the final version of the document and have agreed to the submission for publication.
When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work, it is their obligation to immediately notify the editor of the journal or Editorial Committee, and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the document.
Responsabilities of Reviewers
Reviewers undertake to notify editors of any unethical conduct on the part of authors, and to point out any aspects that could be motive for rejection of submitted manuscripts. In addition, reviewers undertake to maintain confidential any information related to manuscripts they evaluate.
Reviewers should notify editors as soon as possible whether or not they can undertake the review, or if he/she does not feel quailified for the subject matter.
Any manuscript received for review should be treated as a confidential document. It should not be shown or discussed with other experts, colleagues, or students.
Reviewers must conduct themselves objectively. Any personal criticism of authors is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their views clearly, and with valid arguments, undertaking where possible to provide constructive criticisms for improvement of the manuscript.
Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review will be kept confidential, and will not be used for personal gain.
