Predation by the Rufous-browed Peppershrike (Cyclarhis gujanensis) on Wilson ’s Warbler (Cardellina pusilla) in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Tamaulipas, Mexico

The Rufous-browed Peppershrike (Cyclarhis gujanensis) has a diet based on larvae, invertebrates, fruits, and small size vertebrates, but all reports of predation on vertebrates correspond to its South American distribution. We documented the first observation of a Rufous-browed Peppershrike predating on a bird in Mexico. On 24 April 2021, at 17:42 h, in an Oak-Pine forest in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Tamaulipas, we observed a Rufous-browed Peppershrike capturing a Wilson’s Warbler (Cardellina pusilla) at 4 m height, below the canopy, while both foraged with a mixed flock of warblers (Parulidae). The Peppershrike held the warbler by the neck and flew away with its prey. Our observation represents the first report of predation by the Rufous-browed Peppershrike on a bird in North America, confirming that predatory behavior on vertebrates is probably present throughout its distribution.
