Dieta del Verdugo Americano (Lanius ludovicianus) e importancia de los cercos vivos en un paisaje agrícola de Veracruz, México

Resumen

El Verdugo Americano (Lanius ludovicianus) es un ave carnívora cuya dieta mayormente está compuesta por insectos y en menor medida por vertebrados. Aunque común en zonas agrícolas, la especie ha mostrado un declive poblacional. Durante mayo de 2012, analizamos la dieta de una pareja de verdugos a través de presas encontradas empaladas a lo largo de una cerca de alambre de púas y agaves (Agave salmiana) en la zona semiárida del Valle de Perote, Veracruz, México. Registramos 18 especies de presas, nueve especies de vertebrados (cinco aves, dos mamíferos, dos reptiles) y nueve especies de insectos. El 58% de las presas se encontraron en alambres de púas y el 42% en espinas apicales de agaves. Revisamos 32 artículos que reportan vertebrados como parte de la dieta del Verdugo Americano, compilando una lista de 81 especies de vertebrados presas, con la mayor diversidad de presas dentro de los órdenes de Squamata (35) para reptiles y Passeriformes (24) en aves, seguidos por Rodentia (8) para mamíferos. Encontramos un patrón similar en nuestro estudio, donde la mayoría de las presas de vertebrados estuvieron en estos tres órdenes. Nuestros resultados indican que los cercos vivos de agaves son elementos importantes para el mantenimiento del Verdugo Americano en estos paisajes agrícolas ya que les sirven de percha y sitio de caza y almacenamiento de sus presas.
